Dr David Perna asks if Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Can Be Caused By Your Work

Carpal tunnel syndrome or carpal tunnel syndrome, continues to be a common problem here at Dr. David Perna’s office. Symptoms include slight numbness to extremely bad pain in the hand or wrist. The pain can sometimes cause a worker to have to change his or her vocation even. Studies done have shown that the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. This can be the result of repetitive motions, physical injury, and conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and pregnancy. Basically, motions that reduce the tunnel’s size can result in median nerve compression or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Research has found that careers that require a lot of repetitive and forceful work, like industrial jobs with a forceful grip on tools, increases the risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. The evidence is not as clear for those with jobs that require only repetitive motions with no force, like typing on a keyboard.

A Danish study done monitored the wrist health of 5,600 tech assistants. The study concluded that keyboard use is most likely not be a cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. Only 11 percent of workers experienced tingling or numbness in the hands, but 5 percent of that group were formally diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, based on their description of symptoms. The study found that using a mouse for 20 or more hours in the week did increase carpal tunnel syndrome.

Dr. David Perna wants to tell you that although you may not have carpal tunnel syndrome, working at a computer and typing all day can still cause pain in the hands, wrists, forearms, shoulders, and neck. Again, only half of the workers experiencing tingling for numbness met the formal diagnosis for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Pain occurring in the neck, shoulders, and elbows to wrists can possibly put pressure on the median nerve which results in carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr. David Perna and other chiropractic doctors are equipped to evaluate and treat a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr. David Perna treats not only the carpal tunnel syndrome, but the whole person and identifies any other problems that could mimic carpal tunnel syndrome. Many times, a patient may not get full relief unless a separate problem in the neck or shoulders is resolved. This is no problem for Dr. David Perna.
