How Hip Exercises Can Help With Springfield Knee Pain

Knee pain in Springfield is an issue we deal with often. But did you know, this knee pain could be helped by exercising the hips? How you might ask? Well, the knee and the hip are closely linked and have several muscle groups that are connected to each. Conversely if you have knee pain, then exercising the hip could actually help.

How?

Consider this study that was carried out on 18 men and 18 women, each suffering with knee pain. They were split into two equal groups of 9 men and 9 women each.

The first group were to undertake knee exercises only. The second group were to do only hip exercises.

These exercises were to be undertaken three times per week for an eight week period.

At the conclusion of the study, all 36 participants reported significant improvements with their knee pain, showing that exercise really does help. However, the patients who were in the hip exercise group reported even better improvements and for many, the effects lasted for up to 6 months. Clearly, exercising the hips does help knee pain.

Further studies have shown that people with patellofemoral knee pain have excessive internal rotation of the hip compared to pain free people. This further indicates that more emphasis on hip exercise and strengthening will help those patients too.

This is quite common and one of the things we look out for when helping our patients. There are many areas of the body that partner up with other body areas that can be the cause of pain. The feet and low back are linked and if your pelvis is rotated, one leg will effectively be shorter which puts pressure on your low back as well as increasing pain in the feet. Correcting this rotation with chiropractic adjustments corrects this dysfunction, putting the body back in alignment.
