Prevention Better than Cure? Springfield Back Pain Maintenance Care

It’s a famous old saying, prevention better than cure. It is true in most cases though. It’s better to stop a plate from falling and breaking, rather than having to fix a broken plate for example. Your back is no different, and given the fact that low back pain forms one of the most prevalent conditions that affect work, it’s perhaps even more critical to be proactive rather than reactive in this regard.

After a patient has recovered from a back pain issue, chiropractic doctors often recommend a healthier lifestyle (if one isn’t already being practiced). This includes the more popular things such as diet, exercise, fitness routine and the like, but also regular chiropractic treatments. Now this doesn’t form a long term treatment plan where you need to come in 3 times a week, but a once a month or every 6 weeks treatment to keep up on your back health and keep things in good shape can make all the difference.

While research is still ongoing to fully understand why regular adjustments do make a difference, current thinking goes along the line of the treatments most likely improve neuromuscular and biomechanical dysfunctions and so help ward off any potential future problem or injury.

A couple of studies, one done in 2004, the other 2011, reported that patients who had chronic low back pain and had regular chiropractic maintenance care said they had less pain than those who did not have any care.

A 2018 study went further and concluded that out of 328 patients studied, a little under 13 days that were lost to back pain the previous year were gained back the following year thanks to preventative chiropractic care.

The researchers in this study said, “For selected patients with recurrent or persistent non-specific LBP who respond well to an initial course of chiropractic care, MC should be considered an option for tertiary prevention.”

At Back and Body in Springfield, we can also offer our patients this option. It is a great way to ensure that you suffer as little pain as possible clearly showing that prevention is better than cure.
