What Are Common Pain Management Techniques?

People in pain come to people like me (chiropractors and other medical professionals) looking for a silver bullet to stop it.

But it’s not always that easy.  Sometimes, the answer to pain is a complex of approaches.

Drugs may be convenient but they’re also expensive – and not just for your wallet – for your internal organs and overall health.

There are other ways to effectively treat and manage pain which are accessible, non-invasive and effective.

So, this post discusses some common pain management techniques you may want to check out.

The “E” Word

I know this word strikes terror into the hearts of many but it’s one of the most effective strategies for relieving and managing pain in existence – exercise.

While many of you won’t care to hear to the “e” word in the same sentence as pain, it can do wonders for those of you living with conditions which could be a lot less painful if you’d play along!

Mild aerobic exercise like walking, swimming or riding a bike can all contribute to better overall health and support pain management.  For some, Yoga is the right fit.  For others, Pilates or Tai Chi might help.  Find the right exercise for you and I guarantee life will be better.

Physical Therapy

I’m amazed that more pain sufferers don’t take physical therapy seriously as a pain management technique.  But physical therapists are renowned for helping patients improve bio-mechanical issues which might be the root cause of the pain they’re suffering.

They work with you and your individual problem, encouraging you and empowering you by prescribing simple exercises which help between sessions.  With physical therapy, you get a partner on the journey toward pain-free living.

Chiropractic

Here’s where I get to blow my own professional horn.  As a chiropractor, I’m highly trained to understand the intimate relationship between the structures of the spine and the central nervous system.  With the assistance of diagnostic imaging (which usually confirms what my hands have already told me), I locate the source of your pain and using techniques like manipulation and adjustment, reduce it by relieving pressure on nerves.

Many people swear by the services of a chiropractor to reduce and manage pain.

Medical Massage

Massage isn’t just for relaxation.  It’s not just a luxurious indulgence.  Medical massage can relieve pain by targeting stiff, sore muscles.  It also helps to relieve anxiety and the tensions which may be exacerbating your pain.

It’s further believed that massage acts to “reframe” the pain signals your brain’s receiving, replacing them with signals of wellbeing.  While it may not be right for everyone, I’ve seen it work wonders for many patients.
