Can Spinal Decompression Actually Work?

Spinal decompression therapy is another treatment we offer at Back & Body Pain Relief here in Springfield. It is a very powerful therapy with a high success rate that combats the effects of herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, pinched nerves and more.

We often get asked about it so have decided to answer a few basic questions about what it is and how it can help.

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression puts your spine in traction and gently pulls your spine to allow bulges, herniations, nerves to return to where they should be. So the joints of the spine are slightly opened up which reduces the pressure on discs etc and a negative pressure effectively sucks everything back into place. Moreover, spinal fluids, oxygen and nutrients that are allowed back into the area also help increase healing process.

How does it work? Does it hurt?

You are strapped onto the bed of our machine. The machine is programmed to gently open your spine at various angles and distances to allow the discs to be sucked back into place. It is generally quite relaxing (we often see patients nod off during the treatment), but for more extreme cases, the first two or three treatments may see a little discomfort, but nothing painful.

How many treatments and how long for a session?

Each session lasts for 10 to 15 minutes and around 20 to 25 treatments are needed over a four to six week period. Depending on your condition this may be more or less.

Does it work?

This is the question. We have seen many successes in our time operating the therapy and we can say it certainly does help reduce pain. Studies are always on going and the general stats for treatment range between 71% and 89% success rates based on an initial 6/10 pain rating (10 being the most painful) down to a 3/10 pain rating after all treatments have been completed.

It’s an excellent therapy to try if you have been told that surgery may be required. We always suggest trying alternative treatments before taking up the option of surgery, and spinal decompression is one we would certainly recommend based on your condition and after we have examined you to see if you would be a candidate for it.
