Great Accident Prevention Tips

Accident season is almost upon us. Accident season? Well, yes it may be the holiday season, but with that comes a change in weather. Most auto accidents are caused by wet and slippery roads and of course that’s what we’re going to be dealing with for the foreseeable. And once winter hits we may have snow and ice to contend with too. Accidents are rife at this time of year. So we’ve put together a two parter on some great things to thinking about to help you avoid an accident.

Check them out here.

Take your time

If you drive to work, you already know how long it takes, so in poorer weather conditions consider leaving earlier to arrive at your destination in time. Even 10 minutes may help you make all the difference. Same goes for any trip, if you need to be at a location at a certain time (eg you have an appointment at Back & Body at 1pm and it normally takes you 20 minutes drive, then leave 30 minutes early).

Be of sound mind

Relax. No road rage. Just drive to the speed of the road and don’t pressure anyone else. That includes no tailgating.

Belt up

It’s law to drive with your seat belt on, so use it. It’s law for a reason. In NJ, it might not be a primary law for rear passengers to use their belts, but do encourage the use of it. It could save your life as well. Nothing worse than a rear passenger ending up smashing into you if you do stop abruptly.

Distractions

Our cars are getting so complex that there’s a ton of distractions and this includes your cell phone. So absolutely no texting or Facebooking while driving. If you must contact or respond to a message urgently, then pull over safely to do so.

Vehicle condition

The condition of your vehicle is of paramount importance anyway, but in late fall and winter, it’s even more important to have your vehicle operating properly. Check the condition of your tires and of your brakes. Stopping is more important than starting.

Drinking & drugs

Drinking laws are getting stricter by the year it seems, and a good thing too. Bottom line is just don’t even bother to drink if you’re going to drive. As for drugs, check your prescription drugs for any driving impairment you may suffer from taking them. Illegal drugs are another kettle of fish altogether.

So this concludes the first set of tips to help with reducing the chances of having an accident. Apply them, follow them and you will improve driving not only for yourself but for others too.
