Hip injuries in the young may not form the most popular type of injury we see here in Springfield, but it’s still a significant amount. It’s also interesting to note that the types of injury differ between the sexes. As with anything, early intervention is always best if a youngster has hip injuries or pain because the hips do provide the stability and flexibility of the body for proper function. As such, it is easy to aggravate an injury and make it worse and thus harder to deal with if left untreated.

Approximately 5 to 9% of injuries are due to hip problems. An in depth study analyzed the data of over 120,000 youngsters between the years of 2000 and 2010 and found some very interesting stats.

The most common injuries for young boys were:

23% labral tear
11% avulsion fracture
11% slipped capital femoral epiphysis
8% disclocation
8% tendonitis

And the most common for girls:

59% labral tear
14% tendonitis
7% snapping hip syndrome
5% strain
5% bursitis

You can see that girls suffered far more labral tears than boys and the injury list thereafter between the two sexes was completely different. The reason for this is most likely due to the different activities the two sexes partake in. The most common reasons for hip complaints are 23% through dancing & ballet, soccer at 19%, gym at 9%, hockey 8% and track & field at 7%. Just by looking at this list you can see that the types of movement and stresses will be different in each physical activity and the demographic of each sex being involved in each.

Add the complexity of the body still growing at this point of life, it can be challenging to both diagnose and treat. The sooner the patient can come in for treatment, the better as treatment will eliminate pain quicker and recovery will also be quicker. Moreover, the chances of further injury won’t be compounded by simply hoping it goes away.
