Risk Factors for Neck Pain

Neck pain is the cause of many different issues including work absences, injuries, and lowered quality of life. About 1 in 6 people experience neck pain in a given three month time frame. Today, we will be discussing how to combat this neck pain.

Authors at the Department of Orthopedics at Duke University discovered that requiring lengthened/ awkward neck positions was the most significant risk factor for neck pain. Other studies say that taking a few breaks to lessen sitting time can decrease this risk as well. Make sure to improve your sitting posture and fix your workstation circumstances to help you do this.

Another study at Duke University found that psychological risk factors are possibly more significant in the start of neck pain. These include depression, stress, and muscle tension.

Some things that could decrease the risk for first time neck episodes are as follows: a supportive work environment, leisurely physical activity, and overall muscle endurance.

Some previous studies have been done which looked at the presence of the psychosocial factors and weaker neck muscles in those who suffer from chronic neck pain. Therefore, it isn’t a surprise that both of these are important risk factors for first time neck pain onset.

We recommend conservative treatment plans to manage neck pain such as manual therapies. These include mobilization and manipulation performed by a doctor of chiropractic. Some other examples may be neck specific exercises, dietary changes, stress and relaxation techniques, and improving sleep quality. This will help heal your neck and reduce any further risk for pain or discomfort.
