8 Tips for Preventing a Recurring Sports Injury

The horrible truth is that any sports injury can become a recurring problem.  So, the best thing any athlete can do is to treat the body like the finely-tuned machine it is – with mindful respect.  Some injuries can’t be avoided, but there’s a lot you can do to prevent them, so I’m offering my top 8 tips for preventing a recurring sports injury.

1. Warm up

Warming your body up before any intense activity is a no-brainer.  You’re preparing your mind as well as your body.  It’s like the prelude to an opera, setting the scene for what’s to come.

Getting your heart rate up a bit while you stretch your muscles sends your brain the message that something’s about to go down.  It signals your body to get ready!

2. Cool down

You’ve been flying all over the field like the warrior you are.  Now, your body needs a moment for re-entry, so a cool down period is required.

A cool down allows your body’s systems to return to their default gently. Walking or jogging should be followed by stretching, taking your heart rate and blood pressure down to normal.

3. Watch your technique

Technique for any sport is one of the most important components of preventing injuries.  When you’re doing it right, it shouldn’t hurt and you shouldn’t be injured.  Take the time to perfect the technique required by your chosen sport.

A coach or personal trainer can really help.

4. The right stuff

No matter what sport you’re immersed in, having the right equipment is another facet of injury prevention.  That includes the right footwear.  If you’re wearing the wrong shoes, your chances of injury rise exponentially.

5. Let yourself rest

Sure, you’re a fanatic.  A lot of sports enthusiasts are.  But fanaticism is the road to ruin if you don’t curb your enthusiasm.

Take the time to rest and allow your body to regroup.  That means getting enough sleep and giving your body at least 1 day each week to recuperate from its exertions.

6. Ease into it

The temptation is to throw yourself into training wholeheartedly.  But too much soon can cost you in terms of injuries.  Know your limits and play within them.  Be honest with yourself.  Trying to keep with others is valiant, but it won’t do you any favors if you over-estimate your capacity.

7. Balance

Being balanced about the way you train ensures balance in the body.  Combine training methods like resistance training, cardiovascular work and core training with flexibility training and a strong nutritional framework.

8. Address biomechanical issues

Many sports injuries occur because of bio-mechanical issues which haven’t been addressed.  Everyone’s put together a little differently and those differences can sometimes be challenging for sports enthusiasts.

Working out biomechanical issues can be done in partnership with a trainer, but at Back & Body Medical, we’re a team of experts which can help you not only with pain, but with this important aspect of sports injury prevention.
