Medication is pretty much the primary form of treatment for those trying to control their condition. And while it has helped many, research is suggesting the benefits are only short term and that another option may be as effective… meditation.

Scientist Dr James Swanson, is one who has suggested that medication for ADHD sufferers show no long term or lasting benefits. Other researchers are investigating alternative ways to help the condition through non drug avenues.

Meditation is one such form of control that could be of benefit to ADHD sufferers. For sure, the practice has helped millions of non ADHD sufferers for centuries, and is a common way that many start the day to be focused, relaxed and at peace. Meditation isn’t necessarily the practice of emptying one’s mind, it’s based on focusing on one thing such as the heart beat or breathing. As soon as you find your mind begin to wander, you bring it back and focus on what it should be focused on. In brain function terms, it apparently improves connections in this area of the brain and help with focus.

In his studies, Dr Swanson has seen that it has been particularly beneficial for ADHD patients and has helped them to learn the skillset of focus and concentration.

A couple of other studies have also shown positive results for ADHD sufferers with meditation. One study that looked at 50 adults with the condition actually achieved similar results compared to medications in terms of motivation.

And another study in 2017 with patients suffering from anxiety found that 10 minutes of meditation was enough to help with focus in the day that followed.

Clearly, meditation is beneficial to all, and it also has good benefits in helping with anxiety and depression.

Meditation is something chiropractors may suggest in helping patients with their own wellbeing. It is something that can help all people including those with ADHD. It forms part of an overall wellness program for anyone wishing to help improve their physical and mental health.
