ACL Injury? Chiropractic Can Help!

ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries are one of the most common injuries of the knee.  And while you may believe only athletes are susceptible, just about anyone can experience an ACL injury.

Have you got an ACL injury?  Chiropractic can help!  Read on to discover what chiropractic can do to get you up and running (or whatever else it is you love to do).

Breaking it down

I’ve pointed out above that just about anyone can suffer an ACL injury.  But did you know that it’s more common for women than for men?

This ligament serves to stabilize the knee by preventing the thigh bone from moving too far forward.  The American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine reports that approximately 150,000 ACL injuries are treated in the US every year.

And the yearly cost for treating the injury amounts to about $500 million.

Causes

The causes for ACL injuries make it clear that injury to this ligament can happen just about anywhere – not just on the sports field or the running track:

  • Direct impact (shopping buggy incident at the grocery store, falling)
  • Awkward landing after a jump (running down the stairs and skipping the last two steps)
  • During the process of slowing down after running (running to the bus stop)
  • Sudden stops (walking the dog – dogs decides to zag when you zig)

As you can see, the potential for ACL injury is as mundane as daily life.

How chiropractic care can help

Chiropractic care centers the function of your central nervous system, which controls all the functions of your body, including the healing process.

But how helpful chiropractic can be for your ACL injury depends on how seriously you’ve been hurt.  Visiting your chiropractor for a series of adjustments to the knee joint helps restore range of motion and function, which expedites the healing process.

So, the primary function of chiropractic when it comes to ACL injuries is to heal strains (the ligament has been stretched beyond its capacity).  For torn ACLs, chiropractic is a supportive therapy which speeds healing.  But in this instance, it’s not able to restore the normal connections between torn fibers.

Multi-disciplinarian approach

At Back & Body Medical, we practice a multi-disciplinarian approach to injuries and pain.  My work as a chiropractor is supported by practitioners from the disciplines of acupuncture, physical therapy and sports medicine.  This allows us to create complex, personalized programs of care that work.
