Springfield Doc Asks: Is Salt Really Bad for Your Heart?

May 13, 2019Lifestyle0 comments

Is sodium intake as bad for your heart as it was once thought to be? Traditionally, salt has mostly been considered something to eat in moderation and not go over the top on with food.

This study comes from the American Society for Nutrition. It discusses a possible answer to the question: Does reducing salty foods and sodium intake act as helpful on the heart as once thought of?

Now the reason that they’re discussing this issue is because there was a separate heart study where they followed 2600 male and females, and tracked each of their sodium intake. During this study, they discovered that if a person’s sodium intake was less than 2500 mg per day, those individuals had a greater chance of having high blood pressure vs those who ingested 2500 mg or more sodium per day.

This may come as shocking news to some of you.

While this is surprising given what we have been told in the past, the American Heart Association is still recommending to not grab the salt shaker just yet, and more studies and research are needed to examine these findings more.

As with most things in life, moderation is key, so while salt can be a nice condiment to have with your meal, don’t go overboard and add a lot of salt to your meal. The chances are it already has a great deal of salt in it anyway.
