Whiplash Injury Affects Balance

We at Back and Body Pain Relief in Springfield NJ help accident injury victims with whiplash type issues. Did you know that the more and more that whiplash injuries are studied, it is becoming apparent that they can cause many other health problems? You may think that neck sprains and ankle sprains are similar, but they are not. Neck sprains are not simple because the neck is responsible for a lot of duties, like keeping you upright and in balance.

Balance is something that is complex because it involves coordination between sensations including the inner ear, eye movements, and neurological signaling from your neck, spine, and legs. The brain gets inputs from these spots which is how is determines where you are in space, where you’ve been, and where you’re going. The balance is disturbed if any of these areas are affected.

The ways that the balance being distrubed is: stumbling more, not knowing where you;re feet are, tripping more, vertigo, and nausea because of the spinning.

A study from Europe (coll Antropol 2007;31:823) compared whiplash injury patients to non whiplash injury patients and their ability to sense the position of their head in a rotated or tilted way. Patients with whiplash associated disorders showed impairment in sense of position much more than normal patients did.

Chiropractic care, like that of Back and Body Pain Relief NJ will normalize joint function of the neck in whiplash affected patients. Adjustments are done specifically to restore normal mobility and improve neck posture so that balance is better. Balance therapy or other specific exercises will need to be done to fully improve balance and position.

If you have been feeling unsteady, or you’re noticing that you haven’t been on your feet, you may be suffering from a whiplash injury. The symptoms may be very noticeable because your brain and neck are affected by it. Letting it go and hoping it will fix itself will only make the problem worse in the long run.

Come into Back and Body NJ and we will help treat your whiplash injury with the specific adjustments and exercises that you need.

We have also produced a simple ebook on accident injuries and what can be done about them. The book is entirely free and downloadable right here. It’s 15 pages long, and contains very good information about whiplash, the effects and what can be done. Check it out here.
