Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the Office

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition which occurs from the median nerve being compressed or restricted as it passes through the wrist. Repetitive wrist and hand motions can possibly inflame the wrist tissues and place pressure on this nerve. Workers in office jobs or other jobs that require repetitive movements are at an increased risk for CTS. Today, we are going to talk about what can be done to lower the risk of CTS.

In 2021 the study was done with 1000 office workers under the ages of 50 from various workplaces in China. The office workers filled out a questionnaire. The questionnaire included information on demographics, work type, related physical and psychosocial factors, and wrist and hand symptoms. A body chart was used to read the intensity of symptoms, nocturnal symptoms, and aggravating activities. After completing the questionnaire, the users were clinically evaluated and CTS was diagnosed by using standard testing protocols.

The study authors reported that 22% of participants had wrist symptoms and 15% had hand symptoms. 9.6% met the clinical criteria for CTS. Other studies done identified the risk factors for CTS. Some of these are smoking, working with hand or wrist pain, long-term computer use, or working with no breaks.

The authors found that a set amount of breaks spread throughout the day has been proven to reduce the risk of CTS. There is more research that supports the health benefits of integrating exercise and meditation during these breaks as well.

Meditation has been proven to be a wonderful way to relieve stress and anxiety. It also takes pressure off of the neck which is another frequent complaint we see in the office. Even taking a few moments to incorporate some physical activity during a short break could help lower the risk of CTS by keeping the muscles active, warm, and moving.

It may not be possible to completely eliminate one’s risk for CTS, especially if working in an office-like environment. If you are suffering from hand and wrist symptoms, it is important you see a doctor sooner than later. Early intervention may improve your odds of recovery. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to examine the whole self and treat all contributing factors to the patient’s chief complaint. If you are suffering, wait no longer. Come and see us today.
